As you may know, every year for the past, oh, thirteen years or more, I prepare a Pre-Thanksgiving dinner the Sunday before the actual holiday. I do this because my mom's husband has a HUGE family that always gets together for the real deal. So, this way, I get to have dinner with my family and friends, and then everyone gets to go with their extended family on the following Thursday. It works out.
So, everyone always brings a friend or two to the dinner. We need a lot of people because it's a LOT of food! This year, we had a snafu! Alex's friends were hungover, so they didn't make it. My friend, Kim, was majorly ill, so she didn't make it, and one of our family friends is a Weekend Warrior and had drill, so he didn't make it until close to 5:30 (and we ate at noon). So, there were only 5 of us to eat a TON of food.
Alex's dad came by to visit her for a while, but he didn't stay to eat. He blended into the mix very well. He's such a great guy. I think he would fit in just about anywhere. LOL. He gave me some money to help pay the debt of Alex's hospital bills (nice) and spent a good hour mising it up with the familiy. It was pretty nice.
There was enough food left over for Alex (also suffering a hangover) and 3 HUGE care packages that went home with 2 of the bachelors (friends of my mom) and 1 for mom and her husband. I ended up making 3 pumpkin pies, one apple pie, and mom made a blackberry pie. Listen, I LOVE pie, but even I could only eat so much. LOL. Guess what I'm taking to work tomorrow?
While we were eating, I popped in the "Jeff Dunham's Christmas Special". If you don't know who Jeff is, you should definitely check him out on http://www.jeffdunham.com/. He is a ventriliquist/comedian and he is sooooooo funny! So, we watched/listened to that during dinner and everyone was just cracking up! When it was over and everyone finished eating, we all retired to the couches with our coffees and watched "Jeff Dunham 'Arguing With Myself ' ". Another hilarious show with Jeff and his " pals".
After much talking and laughing, Adam (the guy that had drill) showed up. More chatter ensued and more munching. Time for pie! Everyone settled down and we watched Iron Man while all tummies settled.
Cleaning started, and packing care packages, and putting tables and chairs away began. Soon after, mom and her husband left. Alex and I spent a good hour or so talking with Adam and David, the only two left. We discussed relationships, licorice liquor (Ohso), dealing with "the nice guy", and various other topics. All in all, it was just a lot of fun. Surprisingly, there was an awful lot of cussing.
I have been up since 8:00am and people started showing up around 10:30am, and the last to leave walked out the door around 9:00pm. Sure, it's been a long day, but I'm not exhausted. I'm pretty happy with how the day went. It was nice outside, good company inside, the smell of home cooking, good company and conversation, and just a very relaxed kind of day even though there was a lot going on. I am happy. Now, what are we doing for Thanksgiving? I don't know. Maybe we'll come to YOUR house! :)
